If you're planning to visit the Isles of Scilly during the Easter holidays, there are plenty of experiences and natural landscapes to enjoy on these beautiful islands with all the family. Here are a few egg-tastic suggestions:
1. Explore Tresco Abbey Garden: Take a stroll through the stunning Abbey Garden, with its manicured flower laden pathways, unique sculptures, and exotic plants from around the world. Springtime brings vibrant colours and blooming flowers, making it a perfect Easter activity.
2. Walk along the Coastal Paths: All five inhabited islands offer breathtaking coastal walks with stunning views at every turn. Explore the diverse landscapes, from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs, and enjoy the fresh sea air.
3. Visit St. Mary's: Explore the main island of St. Mary's and discover its laid-back charm, historic sites, and beautiful beaches. Don't miss a visit to Hugh Town - the heart of Scillonian life - and the largest town on the islands.
4. Go Wildlife Watching: Easter is a great time to spot wildlife in the archipelago. Keep an eye out for seabirds, seals, and if you're lucky, puffins, dolphins, and basking sharks.
5. Take a Boat Trip: Explore the surrounding islands and islets on a sea safari with the experts. Visit uninhabited islands, secluded coves, and enjoy the islands from a different perspective.
6. Attend Easter Events: Check in with the Tourist Information Centre on St. Mary’s for any Easter events or activities happening across the five islands, such as Easter Egg Hungs, craft fairs, or special seasonal meals at local restaurants.
7. Enjoy Water Activities: If the weather permits, indulge in water activities such as snorkelling, kayaking, or sailing in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the islands.
8. Attend the Low Tide Festival on the 9th April during the Easter break in the channel between Tresco and Bryher when dramatic spring tides make it dry enough to walk between the islands, normally 20 feet under water. Sample locally caught seafood including the famous Scillonian crab as you amble!
9. Visit Historical Sites: Explore the rich history of the Isles of Scilly by visiting ancient sites such as mediaeval remnants, a fortified Garrison, castles, and prehistoric monuments scattered across the islands.
10. Relax and Unwind: Lastly, take some time to simply relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the fauna and flora of the Isles this time of the year. Whether it's lounging on a beach, traversing the Abbey Garden on Tresco, or enjoying a picnic with a view (and bundles of chocolate!) - Easter is the perfect time to unwind in this beautiful island paradise.
11. Get to know the islands' creative folk: The Tresco Makers Market has an impressive range of handmade and island designed wares, making it a top spot for some shopping. If the weather is fair, the market will be open air along the sea wall at New Grimsby, but if its a bit damp, or too blowy, the makers will set up in the Flying Boat Studio just down the road.
