INSPIRED BY LOCAL TALENT AND HUSBANDRY
It is one of Scilly’s most endearing features…. Pop-up stalls and honesty boxes dotted across all the islands selling locally produce including jewellery, art, decorated shells, salad leaves, fruit and veg, pork and beef, jams and fudge. There are fantastic island shops on Tresco, Bryher, St. Martin’s and St. Agnes, all stocking fantastic Scilly produce, and regular local produce markets on St. Mary’s too.
On Scilly, you can’t get more local produce than that which is produced on one of our five tiny inhabited islands!
Beyond food and art, St. Mary’s, and Hugh Town in particular, offers the most options when it comes to retail therapy, with a range of clothing shops, gift shops, newsagent and the like. Hugh Town retains its traditional high street feel with a post office, newsagent, butcher, hardware store and a deli, as well as souvenir shops, clothing stores and Co-Op. Amongst all that is Steamship House, offices for Isles of Scilly Travel where you should go if you have any queries regarding your travel plans.
Mumford’s paper shop receives the daily newspapers around 11am. It also stocks popular magazines and games and goodies for children. You needn’t ever miss the National Lottery either; Mumford’s is the only place on Scilly where you can purchase tickets.
The Foredeck on Silver Street, just off the main street, is Scilly’s long-established clothes retailer. It’s been trading for over 40 years. Musto, North Face, Mistral and White Stuff are all stocked here, as is a wide range of St. Martin’s based Fay Page’s exquisite hand-made jewellery.
Just across the way is 49 Degrees whose IOS brand has become synonymous with Scilly. You’ll see that famous crossed oars logo on colourful hoodies and T-shirts everywhere on the islands. The name comes from 49.55N 6.19W – the map reference for St. Mary’s Quay.
At the other end of the street, you’ll find another long-established shop – Sandpiper. It’s a haven of famous clothes brands like Weird Fish and Raging Bull. It also stocks smart sustainable brands like Braintree Bamboo and Hemp and classy Scilly keepsakes to take home.
Elsewhere on St. Mary’s (as well as across the islands), you’ll find galleries and pretty stalls on people’s doorsteps, selling everything from hand-crafted jewellery, bulbs and vegetables to lobsters and dressed crab meat.
