About
Living on the Isles of Scilly provides endless inspiration for my work. Combining the coastal elements with contemporary design, I love to experiment with texture and sculptural form by bringing the island landscape into the creative process through a variety of methods including unique casting processes, forging and finishing techniques using the local granite, sand and seawater.
Each collection is intentionally created with different techniques. For example the Granite is beaten and textured by the rock itself, the Ocean's form is created through seawater casting, the Beach is brushed with emery papers I make from the local sand. I like the idea of all the collections being different but connected through their Scillonian identity... much like our five islands here; they all vary so much but are equally as special.
The concept of originality is always a focus and a challenge as an artist - but it is one I pursue in method as well as design. The inclusion of colour in my jewellery designs is just as important as texture and form when it comes to interpreting the ideas and inspiration of the Island environment. Precious and semi precious stones in soft natural hues reflecting the Island palette are carefully selected to echo those we see across the landscape; the greys and whites of the granite and sand, the aqua of the shallows and deep sapphire blues of the deep. The yellow gorse, pink thrift and the beautiful greens of the vast array of native plants that blanket the islands… ethically sourced diamonds, sapphires, aquamarines and more, all complimented by their settings in Scillonian textures, created to be worn for a lifetime as modern island heirlooms.
The rocks, the sand, the sea… and the treasures found in between.
