I’ve always known Scilly as we used to holiday here when I was a child, I’ve lived here for the over 20 years now and I have never felt bored or uninspired by the islands – thanks to the seasons and the weather they are constantly changing and every day brings something different. I love to walk, so I make sure I get out every day and it is in these moments that I come up with ideas. My husband, Rob, and I work together – he’s definitely the more practical in the partnership whereas I’m the ideas person! We work with some lovely island makers so we’ve got a strong creative team who are very inspiring.
I’m not great at changing my jewellery every day so I need whatever I wear to be practical and pretty much a permanent fixture; I always have on one of my favourite pieces – either a gold Scilly bee or a gold bowhead whale. Rob made me a diamond ‘engagement’ ring (ten years after we were married!) and I wear that all time too. I’ve had the same pair of gold ‘daisy bud’ hoops 'in' for the last three years – they never come off, even when I’m in and out of the sea. For me jewellery should mean something, have some significance, whilst being very practical and robust!
About seven years ago we started the Fay Page Monday Morning Dip Club - we start the working week with a 9am dip together – although this is just two of us now due to lockdown. It’s then a quick shower and in to the workshop where I’ll go through orders and emails from the night before. This sort of dictates my day, I tend to do about an hour of admin and then I get down to making or packing orders, whichever is the priority. A normal – non-lockdown – day would have about three or four of us the workshop including Rob and myself. In winter, we will just be making and packing web orders but in the summer we have lots of visitors in the studio. It is lovely to see so many familiar faces each week as regular visitors return. Whatever the weather or the season one of us takes the postal orders up to the post office by bike – I never tire of doing this trip so I don’t think any of us consider it the short straw! The afternoons tend to be more making, I love being at the bench in this creative little community so I feel very, very fortunate!
We are constantly inspired by where we live and there have been some incredible winter visitors to the islands this year…. so yes, we’re working on something new! We’re tinkering with prototypes at the moment so it will be a matter of weeks.
I’d love to be able to be kinder to myself and give myself more time off so just a morning at work and then a paddleboard to Tean with Rob and our kids would be magical, followed by a swim and a campfire on the beach. For me, the simplicity of island life is what appeals, so a day like this on an uninhabited island is my dream day – also there are plenty of shells over there so I can get some beachcombing in too!
