Fused glass, fabrics, printmaking, ceramics, jewellery and more. Art glass, decorated ceramics, painted silk scarves and fabric pictures, Sterling silver or seaglass jewellery are all made in the studios at Porthmellon. Come and watch the craftspeople at work, have a chat and maybe buy a piece to take home as a reminder of your holiday. Some of the craftspeople even run workshops so you could come down and learn a new skill. A very welcoming place.
ORIEL HICKS at PHOENIX STAINED GLASS
Oriel has been in the studio for over 20 years, being inspired by both the clarity of the Scillonian light and the richness of colour in glass.
She studied at Reigate School of Art in various architecturally based media including mosaics, decorative glass-fibre screens, cement relief tiles & panels, and large scale murals. The stained glass she learned here was traditional leadwork, which she still does in the winter when given a commission. However, she discovered the art of hot “fused” glass in about 2001 and has concentrated more and more on this technique ever since as it is not so constrained by black lines or solidity of form.
SILVER SAPLING JEWELLERY
Lucy Gerrard and Ben Miles, trade as Silver Sapling. They create original design jewellery using a rustic aesthetic, working in silver, gold and copper, all handcrafted at the Phoenix Studios.
Inspired by the surrounding nature, history, textures and beauty of this part of the world, popular collections include the Agapanthus range and the series of hand forged bowls.

EMMA KATE HUMPHRIES
Emma's work is inspired by the ever-changing seascapes of the Isles of Scilly. Although she works in a variety of materials, the majority of Emma's work is in polymer clay.
She rolls and extrudes the clay in an infinite range of colours, patterns shapes and textures, then forms it into intricate buttons, scarf pins, jewellery, pictures and many other products.
VICKIE HEANEY | PRINTMAKER
Original screenprints and linocuts inspired by the islands’ wildlife & marine heritage. Using her background in zoology as a starting point, the artist Vickie Heaney employs clean, stylish lines and vibrant colours to explore the bold patterns & designs abundant in the natural world. See her at work in her open studio and peruse her range of hand-decorated bone china and upcycled vintage crockery.
SCILLY SCARVES
Beautiful hand-painted 100% silk scarves and ties, with designs inspired by the Isles of Scilly. Liz has had a range of cards printed from her silk paintings of local views, flowers and wildlife. For those who like something really quirky she makes a small range of beaded spiders.
Courses to design and decorate a hand-painted silk scarf are available for adults and children on request.
JULIA WILLIAMS at THE SCILLIEST THING
Julia's studio is called "The Scilliest Thing". She studied graphic design at Birmingham Polytechnic the late 70's and the inspiration for her designs on fabric is drawn from the natural beauty of her adopted home of St Mary's.
Each image is transferred by heat onto polyester material and transformed into cards, pictures and decorative items for the home..
Workshops can be arranged on Tuesdays by prior booking
LESLEY DOYLE at THRIFTIE PIXIE
Working within the ethos of sustainable living, Lesley upcycles fabrics and haberdashery under the trade name "Thrifty Pixie", to make a variety of hand-crafted bags, journals and decorative items. Her range also includes beach-craft wall hangings, windchimes and mobiles, created using ‘sea treasures’ discovered on the beautiful, sandy shoreline of the Isles of Scilly.
